Hoodia History

Hoodia gordonii is an ancient spiny plant that resembles a cactus. It has been utilized for a thousands of years by the Bushmen in Southern Africa to suppress hunger during lengthy hunting expeditions through the desert.

It was only recently that hoodia gordonii's main active ingredient was patented. Phytopharm and the pharmaceuticals giant acquired the right to develop and commercialize hoodia gordonii as a weight loss drug to be consumed in the West. In addition, the pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, was granted permission to study the active ingredient "P-57" molecule in hoodia gordonii for the purpose of developing a synthetic molecule to be used as a weight loss drug. But the man-made molecule demonstrated insignificant resulting effect.

When it became known the synthetic version of the "P-57" molecule was not going to work, there was a sudden high demand for the natural hoodia gordonii.

When the Bushmen learned that Phytopharm was conveniently positioned to become billions of dollars richer from their knowledge of the hoodia gordonii plant, they were not exactly thrilled. But thanks to Roger Chennells(a lawyer in South Africa), applied speedy legal, political, and moral pressure on CSIR(Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) and Phytopharm. Mr. Chennells succeeded to force CSIR and Phytopharm to pay the Bushmen a share of financial compensation through the commercial sale of the incredible hoodia gordonii to the general public. Furthermore, thanks to the Bushmen's successful court case, hoodia gordonii is now legally harvested in the Kalahari desert, and the Bushmen receives fair compensation; this ensures that the hoodia available for the public is authentic.

H57 hoodia gordonii is growing rarer by the day and harder to find.  Why?  Because it takes between 5 to 7 years to grow hoodia, and if the demand for hoodia continues to increase, the demand will soon exceed the current supply.

WARNING: many vendors are selling questionable hoodia products.  Why take risks of ordering fake hoodia?  Play it safe.
